"Disabling arthritis flare-up"

About: Adult Health and Social Care Localities / Rehab Services Barrhead Community Nursing General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

Arthritis suddenly and dramatically flared in my left foot along the top and the sole of my foot as well as my ankle, leaving me disabled and unable to move. I was in pain, frustrated at not being able to put any pressure on my foot, leaving me bed-ridden, and without any aids to help me and leaving me unable to look after myself. I am in my eighties and prior to this I was active.

After calling my GP, I was seen by a member of a healthcare team who provided additional aids not already supplied by family members.  She and the team also arranged for painkillers to manage the extreme levels of pain, and exercises to slowly improve the flexibility in my foot over time. Family and friends also provided additional support to help improve my situation.

In particular, I wish to thank one of the care team nurses who, in her visit to check on me, realised there was a smell of gas, which led to a gas leak being found and sorted the same day. I can honestly say that she saved my life, and have told her so during a follow-up telephone call with her.

Dear plutofc89,

My name is Lynne Siddiqui and I am the Community Rehabilitation Service Manager and Lead Allied Health Professional in East Renfrewshire HSCP.

I was sorry to read you have had such a difficult time recently as a result of your arthritis symptoms. Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding the assessment, advice and supports you received from the staff within our Community Rehabilitation Service. I am delighted to hear that the interventions from our Rehabilitation Assistant Practitioner and Community Rehabilitation Nurse have had such a positive impact while you recover from this debilitating flare up. Furthermore, I am incredibly thankful to know that a member of staff was fortunately in the right place at the right time to identify a gas leak which allowed the situation to be resolved without incident.

Thank you again for taking the time to highlight your story, and I have passed your thanks on to the team and staff involved.

With best wishes,

Lynne
