"My broken leg"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / Paediatric Unit Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

I am a young person and I was in a motocross accident at the Elgin track where another bike crashed into my leg. The paramedics came to help me and I was taken to Dr Grays by ambulance. I was in lots of pain but the paramedics were really nice and gave me pain relief. At hospital I was given an xray and told by the doctors that I had a broken and fractured leg so had to be put in a cast.

I spent the night in hospital but the nurses allowed my mum to stay with me and they gave her a bed right beside me.

I was in the children’s ward where the nurses were so lovely and very patient with me. I felt very anxious as I hadn’t been in hospital before but they made me feel at ease and explained everything clearly to me.

I didn’t like having to spend a night in hospital but I knew I had to for X-rays so that the doctors could make my leg better. The nurses gave me a cheese sandwich because I was starving and made me toast for breakfast in the morning. They made my mum lots of cups of tea too!

I got to pick the colour of my cast which I have to wear for around 8 weeks! I picked orange, the colour of my motorbike and I can’t wait to get all my friends to sign their name on it.

I was very anxious about moving from my bed and having to use crutches but the doctors decided it would be best for me to use a zimmer first of all. I was scared but the doctors and nurses were so patient and explained what was going to happen so eventually I managed and realised it wasn’t that bad after all! I had a wee practice on the zimmer in the ward before being taken out to our car to go home. My dad and the doctor helped me into the car.

I was so glad to be home but can’t thank all the paramedics and hospital team enough for their help, patience and understanding. I have a long road ahead of me yet but I will fix and hope to get back to my motocross in time.

A big thank you to the nurse who gave me two boxes of Lego to take home to keep me occupied for a while. Thank you so much! x

Dear Mr Motocross #41

Thank you so much for sharing your experience on Care Opinion. I was really sorry to hear about your accident but so pleased to hear about the care that you received from our paramedics and everyone at Dr Grays.

Fractures can be so painful and am glad the paramedics were able to give you some painkillers before you got to hospital. If you want to contact me directly, I would be happy to pass your thanks onto the actual paramedics who cared for you. My email address is martin.esposito@nhs.scot. It is not a problem if you are not able to do so, we are just glad that we were able to help.

On behalf of the Scottish Ambulance Service, I wish you well with your ongoing recovery and hope you get back to your motocross as soon as possible.

Best wishes.

Martin.

p.s. am very jealous about the lego!

Dear Mr Motocross #41

I hope you're well on the road to recovery after your accident at the motocross track a few weeks ago.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience and for your kind words about the team at Dr Gray's. Hospitals can be quite scary places, especially if you've never been to hospital before. I was delighted to read that the doctors and nurses looked after you so well and made sure you had everything you needed to continue your recovery at home. Lego certainly helps to make everything feel better!

I will share your feedback with the Dr Gray's team and wish you all the best.

Kind regards,

Louise

Dear Mr Motocross #41

I hope that you are feeling much better and that you manage to get back on your orange motorbike again soon. Thank you for sharing your story and for the lovely comments about all of the team members who looked after you and your mum. Hospital toast alway does the trick when you've an empty tummy!

Take care,

Niki
