I was recently admitted to the University Hospital Wishaw A&E department with severe pain and what they failed to recognise was the early stages of sepsis.
The initial nurse who was in charge of my care made no attempt to try and get my pain under control. They offered me no reassurance whilst I was in pain or showed any care or compassion. The only time the nurse engaged in conversation was when they were extremely rude to my wife who had to witness me in severe pain, whilst they took 25 mins to get the pain relief in the first place then never came back to assess my pain.
Thankfully, a very kind nurse who was walking past seen my distress and did get me more pain relief and offered reassurance to myself and my wife which helped relieve our anxieties and also enquired about where the ambulance was that was transferring me to Monklands.
At Monklands, they recognised quickly that I was showing signs of sepsis and I was commenced on regular morphine for my pain. The paramedics who transferred me were very good and were extremely considerate to the amount of pain I was in and did their best to make the journey across as comfortable as possible.
Charge nurse in SACU was amazing with myself and my wife and accommodated me even though I was in a bed. The nurses in ward 6 were fantastic, eventually they got my pain under control for which I am very grateful.
The medical staff I would like to thank for their quick interventions from when I arrived to discharge.
This is the second time I have had sepsis in 3 years the first time I also did attend A&E at UHW and the care from both the nursing and medical staff was fantastic unfortunately this time it was more traumatising than fantastic for myself and my wife.
