My daughter is under review with a Consultant Paediatrician at the Ulster Hospital due to being born very prematurely with low birth weight. She attends reviews every 3-6 months.
My experience of our consultant has been disappointing. They do not interact with my baby / observe her and relies on my report. I feel rushed at the outpatient appointments and under pressure. If bloods are taken I have to chase the results of these and have not been provided with her most recent report despite asking several times. As a parent I am my child's advocate and I need to understand her medical care in order to be involved in it.
I think there is scope to improve interactions with both parents and babies. Doctors need to look at the child holistically, including their recent referrals and investigations.
The positives are that when I have had concerns about my baby these were listened to and investigated with further tests.
