"Care and compassion of all staff outweighs negatives"

About: Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre Gartnavel General Hospital / Clinical Haematology Gartnavel General Hospital / Urology General Practices in NHS Highland Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Clinical Haematology (Ward 4c) Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Urology (Ward 11c)

(as a relative),

My husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer and non Hodgkin lymphoma in April 2022, his kidney was removed in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital at the end of April.  He made a good recovery and continues to be cared for by the urology/haematology consultants at The Beatson and Gartnaval hospitals, along with our GP’s at the Medical Practice.

Following a recent MRI there appears to be metastasis in his lung and bladder but to look at him you wouldn’t know it.  He attends Healthy Options in Oban and goes to the gym three or four times a week.  Yesterday he attended the Vale of Leven Hospital where he had a bronchoscopy and a biopsy was successfully taken. He is on the urgent list for a TURBT (trans urethral resection of bladder tumour).

My husband would like to thank all the doctors for their expertise and the wonderful nursing staff for their care and compassion, he really can’t thank them enough.

There are just a few things that he feels could be done better:

He couldn’t eat the food at QEUH,  but once he was able to get out of bed he went down to the atrium to the shop and bought some edible food.

I know most of us would enjoy having a private room but John felt irritated by the constant mumbling of voices out in the corridor but no one to talk to.

The last grumble is about car parking but not sure what can be done about this?

However, the care and compassion of all the staff, both medical and administrative, outweighs the negatives.

Dear JB75

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your husband’s care and treatment. I am delighted to hear that he has made a good recovery.

I am sorry to hear that your husband was unable to eat the food and I apologise for this. I will share this with the Catering Team, so they are aware of this.

I appreciate that not everyone likes having a single room and that some people can find this isolating. Unfortunately, most of the wards at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital are single rooms.

We are very aware of the difficulties our patients can experience when parking at our hospital sites. We continue to work closely with Group Nexus (the external car parking company). If you have difficulties find a parking space, please speak to a Car Parking Attendant and they will endeavour to assist you.

I am pleased that the care and compassion of all the staff, both medical and administrative, outweighs the negatives.

Please pass on my best wishes to your husband.

Take Care

Nicole

Thank you for your response. The comment about the constant mumbling on the corridor at QEUH Glasgow, was more about the acoustics of the building, maybe something to keep in mind for future projects. Have to say, we have never seen a car park attendant, do they have a special place where we can find them?

Unfortunately it appears that following an MRI/CT in early March, the cancer has returned. He has tumours in his chest and bladder. He had a bronchoscopy recently at the Vale of Leven which went well but we haven’t had results yet.

My husband has been promised urgent surgery for a bladder resection but as of today, we haven’t heard anything or been given a date. We do understand that because of various reasons there are lots of people waiting for treatment, some I’m sure are more unwell than my husband but the biggest problem we are having is with the lack of communication.

My husband is currently being seen by urology and haematology, and we understand that a cardiothoracic surgeon is also looking at his case.

Hi JB75, thank you for your taking the time to tell us of the positives of your husbands recent stay and some of the issues you and your husband experienced within the QEUH. It was impressive to hear that he is making a good recovery and going to the gym.

In terms of the Catering issues, it was disappointing to hear that your husband had to go elsewhere for food. For the future can I direct you to the Senior Charge Nurse of the ward who would discuss alternatives available with Catering?

In terms of parking, as Nicole says, we strive to work collaboratively with the company responsible for parking and a discussion with the parking attendant would likely be beneficial in the first instance.

Since coming to QEUH in 2015 we have noticed single rooms are preferable for some patients but not for all.

Thank you again
