My husband has dementia and when he was diagnosed we were asked if we wanted to sign up up to the butterfly scheme. This scheme places a butterfly symbol on medical records informing medical staff of the condition. We agreed to this.
While attending an appointment at Forth Valley Royal Hospital my husband was taken for some routine procedures, then a Doctor came and spoke to him. My husband then came in to the waiting area and told me we had to wait to speak to the doctor. After over an hour I went to find out when we might be seen as my husband was getting agitated. I was told he had seen the doctor and we could go home. No one was aware he had dementia and they didn't inform me of the outcome of the appointment. I was told I should have told them he had dementia and I would have been allowed in. I didn't mention the dementia when I was asked to wait as I understood someone would come back for me before my husband spoke to the doctor.
If this is to work then staff need to be aware of the scheme and look out for the butterfly symbol. I do not feel it is appropriate for me to have to announce my husband's condition in a public space. I do not wish to complain about the staff but feel helpful information should be readily accessible for the staff.
