"My dad's experience"

About: Southern Health & Social Care Trust / Urgent Care Centre

(as a relative),

Failing to get an appointment or call back from the doctor, my dad rang Phone first at CAH, explaining what was wrong. He was told that he was not in the category to attend ED, considering my dad explained he had been in hospital in November past, was on oxygen and has COPD. The staff member still maintained he was not in the category.

999 had to be rang that next day and he ended up in hospital for 2 weeks, the way my dad wad treated was disgusting. Only I was there and heard the conversation, I probably would have said my dad was exaggerating.

I only hope the staff member involved - I do have their name btw - doesn't have to go through the same thing.

Good morning,

I am sorry to hear of your dad's experience with our Phone First Service. Phone First was introduced in Northern Ireland by the Department of Health in November 2020 with the intention to help patients access the right care and avoid busy Emergency Department (ED) waiting rooms. The benefits being that patients may be treated via a suitable pathway and do not have to wait a significant time in ED to be seen.

It is difficult to comment on the case you have highlighted without being aware of the information surrounding your case. If you wish to contact us to discuss your individual experience further please do not hesitate to do so.

Kind Regards,

Patricia.
