"An unfortunate accident!"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

I accidentally grabbed the barrel of a curling iron, heated to 260 degrees at 5am. My fingers and the palm of my hand had burn injuries and I was in quite a bit of pain. I telephoned NHS24, only in the hope of being directed to an OOH nurse for dressings. However, the young man on the phone was so caring and reassuring, he calmly coached me through the pain of running the burns under cool water. It was decided due to the time and location of the burn, being seen at A&E would be the best option.

On arrival at A&E at the QEUH, I was triaged within 15 minutes. The triage nurse kindly gave me analgesia and gently removed my cling-film dressing for something more comfortable. Following that, I only waited another 20 minutes before seeing a medic. My care was outstanding, and everyone member of staff involved was so kind and compassionate. Thank you all so much.

Dear Cdm93,

thank you for taking the time to submit a care opinion, I hope your hand has healed now - having done similar myself with a heated hair appliance, I can absolutely sympathise with how painful it is! I’m delighted that your journey, from your initial phone call to being discharged after receiving treatment within the Emergency Department was seamless and prompt. I’ll pass on your lovely comments to the staff within the emergency department, they will be so delighted you appreciated the care and compassion you received.

With kind regards,

Karen
