"Apathetic staff"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit

(as a parent/guardian),

We attended Queen Margaret MIU with our son. We were booked in by a lovely member of staff but that's was sadly the only positive in our time there.

We waited a short time, just under 2 hours, in which time the 2 staff saw a couple of patients. When it was my son's turn we were summoned by a nurse who was glum looking - looked like they would rather be anywhere else.

We explained what had happened and they gave my son a 30 second once over before declaring he was fine. I raised concerns about some symptoms he was having to which they responded curtly that it was to be expected and he could go back to school.

Good job I didn't as he was violently sick in the car! I suggested a need for safeguarding due to violence in the home. this was ignored. I felt we were an inconvenience to the two staff on shift and it has put me off seeking help for my children.

Dear foxtrotxb66

My name is Siobhan McIlroy and I am the Head of Patient Experience. NHS Fife welcomes all feedback, so thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion.

I am pleased you received a warm welcome to the unit but I am sorry to read of the poor experience you and your son received thereafter when you attended Queen Margaret MIU. This is not the standard of care we would want or expect for our patients and I am sorry this has happened.

I am sorry you were made to feel like an inconvenience. This must have been very frustrating and upsetting for you. Please do not let that put you off seeking support for your child. If you ever need help or your son is sick again please do not hesitate to use NHS Fife Services. We are here to help and provide care to everyone in Fife. Again, I am deeply sorry you have be put in that position.

I am very concerned that you reached out for help and this was not acknowledged when you suggested a need for safeguarding due to violence in the home. Please can you contact me as I would like to make sure you and your son is safe and if NHS Fife can help in any way. My email address is siobhan.mcilroy@nhs.scot or you can phone me Mon-Fri 09:00-16:30hrs on 01592 643355 Ext 28154. If the answer machine is on or you send an email please ensure you mention "Apathetic staff" as Care Opinion is anonymous.

You could also contact Fife Women's Aid if you are experiencing violence in the household or they could provide you further agencies or support. You can call them on:08088025555.

Thank you again for sharing your story, and I hope your son is feeling better and you are both safe and well.

Best wishes and take care, Siobhan
