"A small surgical procedure - truly rewarding experience"

About: Cannock Chase Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

After 2 1/2 years of quite severe back and leg pain, following an accident at home, I finally managed to get a consultation with the surgeon at Cannock Chase hospital. He sat me down, showed me the MRI scans on my Back and thoroughly explained what was happening and how he could help and what the procedure was. He told me to expect a letter with confirmation of the date in about 4-6 weeks time. I actually received the letter 10 days later and the date for the procedure was in a further 10 days.

I arrived at the hospital on time and was shown to a 4 person waiting area, where almost immediately I was greeted by a nurse who took all the relevant information from me. ( blood pressure, temperature, blood sugar levels etc).

Another member of the nursing team then came around and offered tea and coffee.

I was then visited by the consultant surgeon, who explained the procedure to me again and asked if there were any questions from myself.

I then got dressed into the hospital gown, and right on time was taken into the operating room where all the staff were waiting. I was greeted very warmly by all of the staff, was put onto the operating table, where once again all of my vitals were taken, and then the surgeon began the procedure. It was all over in about 20 to 30 minutes and I was wheeled into the recovery room where my Care nurse explained what would happen in the next 30 minutes or so, and if I had no issues would be released to go home.

Katrina was an extremely warm and friendly person with a great sense of humour, offered me a drink and something to eat and explained she was getting my release papers arranged and would be back with them shortly.

I had no further issues on the day and was duly released.

2 days later I received the date for the follow up consultation, which I believe was extremely quick and efficient and I am very much looking forward to seeing the consultant again so that I can thank him in person.

He told me on the day that I should start to feel the benefits of the procedure in about 5-6 days, but I can tell you that after 48 hours I went for a walk and managed to walk for about half a mile without stopping. I must explain that before the operation I could only walk for about 150 metres before my legs and back were screaming in agony.

All in all this has been a truly rewarding experience and I cannot thank Mr. Goru and his team enough.
