"Unprofessional and uncooperative"

About: Adult Health Services / District Nursing

(as a service user),

A pity to report that I have found the district nursing team the least professional and uncooperative team I have ever experienced.

Having recently registered in the area temporarily, I wanted to arrange for my district nurse care while I was back in the area (as I have had at my home) following my cancer diagnosis and extensive surgeries to remove a bowel tumour.

When I tried to arrange things via telephone, I felt the staff members I spoke with were hostile and rude during our conversations. I received a phone call to refute my position as a housebound patient despite previously having had the temporary arrangements in place at the end of 2023.

The team made comments including that if I'm able to travel up here by train (with assistance) then I can get to the health centre, and that they did me a favour with the previous arrangements, which I found to be both astounding and ridiculous as a patient with severe nerve damage to the leg, two nephrostomies and a catheter, rendering me unable to walk or pursue daily activities normally.

I was surprised they did not seem to understand that the NHS is not a favour based system. The irrational hostility and discrimination I experienced was totally uncalled for and I sincerely hope no other patient has to experience this type of behaviour.

Despite direct contact from my usual GP surgery and my local district nursing team, the temporary team that I met still feel uncooperative and unsupportive to myself as a cancer patient. I have experienced the general attitude of the district nurses I came into contact with as hostile, uncooperative and unprofessional.

I will pursue my complaint with NMC and the CQC to protect the interests and human rights of myself and other patients.

Dear paprikamf55

Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback on our District Nursing team, I am very sorry to hear that your experience was that they were unsupportive and unprofessional.

We work across the HSCP services to maximise independence and we do encourage those who use our services to attend our clinic rooms when they are able to do so. Our housebound services are for those who are unable to get out of their homes and I am sorry if the communication around this was not clear.

I am keen to ensure that you are able to access the care you require and would encourage you to please contact our services who can discuss all of your needs with you and how we can address these.

Our Treatment rooms are open

Monday- Friday 08:00-18:00 and are located at:

Port Glasgow Health Centre

2 Bay Street, PA14 5EU- 01475 497 120

Greenock Health & Care Centre

Wellington Street, PA15 4NH- 01475 501 289

Gourock Medical Centre

181 Shore Street, PA19 1AQ- 01475 497 120

I can see that your complaint has now come through officially to the HSCP and we will respond to this as per our complaints policy.

Yours sincerely

Laura Moore

Update posted by paprikamf55 (a service user)

Hi

Thank you for your response however I feel this does not fully comprehend or address the gist of my complaint.

My reason for complaining was due to the extreme difficulty I have faced when making polite enquiry into trying to access district nursing support in March this year (2024). The telephone calls I have made to and received from the district nursing team have been met with an unwarranted negative, hostile and unsupportive attitude. It is completely unjustifiable that patients trying to access care are met with this tone and attitude by people who are entrusted to behave in an empathetic manner and with professional standards.

I do hope arrangements can be made for additional training on dealing with patient enquiries and handling these in a calm and professional manner while also treating people with dignity and respect going forward. I also truly hope the overall standards can be raised.

Thank you for your response and further clarity, apologies that my response did not address your complaint.

I understand my colleague Donna spoke to you as part of the complaints process on Friday. We have discussed your concerns and she will be leading on taking these issues forward for the team.
