"Felt dismissed when I sought assistance"

About: Maternity care (Wards 47, 48 & 50) / Maternity Assesment/Triage

(as a service user),

I have been deeply concerned throughout my antenatal and postnatal care when communicating with the maternity assessment unit.

It has always felt as though they will do anything to get you off the phone and would prefer if you did not attend the unit under any circumstances.

For example, I phoned at 24 weeks gestation with serious concerns regarding baby’s movement (as per NHS guidance) and was told on the phone - we are not concerned about baby movement before 28 weeks, please don’t attend. Thankfully, my baby was ok, however, I was very upset and concerned about the health of my baby  for the hours following this phone call.

Following my baby’s birth, unfortunately, I have had a number of issues with my c-section wound. As per the guidance, I have called maternity assessment (up to 6 weeks) multiple times to seek help and each time was dismissed and told not to attend. Now, at 7 weeks post natal, my wound needs intervention. I do wonder if this could have been avoided, had I not been dismissed every time I sought assistance from maternity assessment.

Dear Sunnydays18,

I am so sorry to read about your experience with the Maternity Assessment Unit/Maternity Triage at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and that you felt dismissed when you asked for help.

As a Maternity service, we always encourage women to reach out to us when they need assistance and I am sorry that we have not been able to reassure you during your pregnancy and postnatal period. We are currently working on improving our Maternity Triage service and value and appreciate all feedback.

If it would be helpful for you and also to help improve our care, I would encourage you to contact me directly in order to review your experience in more detail on the email address below.

Once again, we encourage all women to reach out when they have concerns and I apologise that we did not supply the support you needed.

Best wishes

Gaynor
