"My son’s care"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Gastroenterology (Ward 10) University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was recently admitted to A&E after an appointment with our doctor. His doctor called Wishaw General hospital when we were in their treatment room, explained my son’s symptoms & asked for Crohn’s & colitis tests to be carried out. My son had been bleeding when doing the toilet for roughly 7-10 days, feeling so tired all the time & had lost roughly 20lbs in weight.

I felt the care he received was really bad. I was told I couldn’t stay with him so I went home to get his overnight things because he was being kept in. I handed his things in & went home. I was absolutely disgusted when he called me early morning to say they had released him without speaking to me or without an adult being there. He is only a teenager.

He was told if his symptoms lasted another 10-14 days to make another appointment with his doctor. We had to go back with stool samples which his doctor gave him to do & said to hand them into Wishaw General as it was late on the Friday afternoon & this way they would be tested quicker. There was no discharge letter gave to my son or on the system as the receptionist couldn’t find it.

The receptionist then went for a nurse to come & get the samples. The nurse who came to take them said it was ridiculous, I should have handed them into my doctors surgery & wasn’t pleased at all.

I had to call NHS24 as my son started vomiting blood. I then refused to go to Wishaw General & took my son to Monklands Hospital, who from the minute we got there were amazing. My son was admitted, he was then taken to Ward 10 who were fantastic. The doctor there did an emergency scan & decided there & then my son had to go through an emergency sub total colectomy operation on that day.

I will be forever thankful to him & all the staff in Ward 10 who looked after my son so well. I have asked if the Crohns & colitis tests were carried out at Wishaw General & have been told they weren’t! Had these tests been done at that time my son wouldn’t have had to go through what he did since he was released until being admitted to Monklands.

Dear Allymcsev

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion.

I am so sorry that your son had such a negative experience prior to attending University Hospital Monklands (UHM). I am unable to comment on what has happened at University Hospital Wishaw (UHW) but I would hope someone from there would respond to your comments.

I am glad to hear that the doctors and nurses in ward 10 at UHM looked after your son well and that you were happy with his care.

I am sure this has been a very worrying time for you both and that now you can move forward.

It is great encouragement to have such feedback and I will be happy to pass this on to the team in Ward 10

I hope your son is recovering well.

Kind regards

Alan

Thank you for your response Alan and I’m so glad you will be passing my feedback onto ward 10.

As of yet no one from Wishaw General has responded, I was hoping they would have by now.
