"Emergency Spinal Surgery"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Neurosurgery (Ward 64 – 66)

(as the patient),

I was recently admitted into the A&E at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. I needed an MRI scan ASAP as I'd lost the power in both legs & my bladder. I was transferred to the Neurological building at the QEUH, where I had emergency microdiscectomy surgery.

After the surgery I was in ward 64, under the care of the Clinical Nurse Specialist Neurosurgical, Harriet. She was very informative, friendly & easy to talk to, she made me feel at ease & explained that my new post-surgery problems (numbness & pins and needles) was nerve damage called Cauda Equine Syndrome. She came to the ward every morning to see me , although I've been told it could take 18 - 24 months for it to go away, it may never go back to normal, I feel positive for the future.

She called me at home 1 week after my discharge to check on me.

I had a follow-up appointment, 9 weeks post-op with Harriet, she was very friendly & passed on information about Spinal Injuries Scotland, that I can contact for more support if needed.

I'm recovering well & I will have a telephone appointment follow-up in a few months.

Thank you to everyone in the hospital for the help I needed, I will be forever grateful.

Thank you for your kind feedback following your surgery and inpatient stay in Ward 64. I will be sure to pass this on to Harriet, the Ward 64 team and the surgeons involved in your care.

Thank you once again
