"Welcoming demeaner which makes all the difference"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Castle Mey Ward Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Play Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter was admitted to Castle Mey ward recently late in the evening. The next morning I was quite anxious and upset about her being in hospital on oxygen. Katie from the play team on the ward approached my daughters beside and was very comforting towards me as I was very teary and didn't have any family with me at this point. She offered to sit with my daughter so that I could go and get fresh air which I thought was very kind. She also told me she was there to chat to if I felt I needed to chat to anyone.

Katie then went on to tell me about the different services the hospital provides for us to do whilst we were there to make our time a little easier. She showed me a family room where I could bring my baby in to spend a little time with her as under 5s weren't allowed on the ward. This allowed us to have dinner together for the 4 nights my daughter was in and meant that myself and husband was able to see our baby as well as be there for our sick daughter.

Each day Katie was in she would greet us with a smile and welcoming demeaner which makes all the difference in the stressful time. I felt Katie was personally interested in us as a family and cared about how our time was in the hospital and was very reassuring.

Dear Claire O,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your story about your recent stay in Castle Mey with your daughter. I am sorry that your daughter was ill and had to spend time in hospital and I hope she is recovering well.

I am glad that Katie was able to provide reassurance, a much needed break for you as well as information about what is available within the hospital. It can be a very stressful time so I am glad she was able to provide some comfort and this story has already been shared with her and she is delighted and grateful that you took the time to comment and that she made a bit of a difference to your stay. As play staff, an important part of our role is to provide support and offer breaks to give parents/carers some much needed time away from the ward so I am glad you were able to benefit from both.

Kind regards

Margaret McEwan
