"Staff were professional, caring and patient"

About: Causeway Hospital / Acute Elder Medicine 1 (Rehabilitation)

(as a relative),

My sister was admitted to The Causeway Hospital several weeks ago with a spinal fracture. She also has COPD and Dementia, so there is a lot to deal with. Whilst there she had a fall and fractured her pelvis.

Last week I flew over from England to visit for a few days.

I appreciated that I was allowed to visit over the normal visiting times. The staff were professional, caring and patient on the whole. There were times when they were more than overstretched and those qualities dipped accordingly. I would blame under-staffing for that. Also I felt the wait time for response to calling for a nurse was frequently too long, after all they are sick and deserve to have reasonably prompt responses.

I often found my sister in pain which is difficult to see and the family didn't always have the best of communication, as staff changed frequently.

On the whole I would like to say "Thank you" and I will be writing to my MP about the overstretched NHS.

Good morning vegafq49, apologies for delay in response.

I am Nicky Butcher, assistant clinical services manager at Causeway Hospital, and AE, is one of my areas.

I am sorry to hear that your sister was unwell, and had a fall which resulted in a fracture.

I can appreciate that for you this has been an exceptionally worrying time.

We work tirelessly with our falls team colleagues, and also make use of assistive technology to try to reduce the risk of falls, and it is also something we consider as regards the placement of patients in the bay or ward.

I am sorry that you perceived the ward to be short staffed, and that you felt care was compromised due to this.

I endeavour at all times to ensure that staffing levels are what is funded for the ward, and staff endeavour to deliver care and attention promptly.

Appreciate your response, and will share with my team.

Thanks

Nicky
