"Long term symptoms"

About: Sidwell Street Clinic / Exeter Sexual Health

(as the patient),

Last appointment in January. Told to phone when next had symptoms and I would be made a same day appointment. Suffered with an std passed to me by a previously abusive partner. For obvious reasons recurrent outbreaks are a hideous reminder of the past trauma.

Monday - unable to get through on phone line. Cuts out after several minutes. Tried 20+ times

Tuesday - thrown out of call 10+ times. Finally got through to be told no same day appointments. Was offered telephone appointment. Was called back but never actually connected. I work in the hospital myself and have to move to a confidential space with signal.

Wednesday - thrown out of call 10+ times. Finally got through to again be told no appointments. Unavailable until 13th. Got upset on phone and was offered appointment at 15:30.

The doctor assessing me once again just made me feel like there isn't an answer saying I'm an unusual case and that it might not be the diagnosis I was given by the same clinic. I just feel like I've been really struggling with nasty symptoms for almost 2 years and it's not been taken seriously.. Again and again I've been told it will probably get better and that some people just have a bad first 3 months/6 months/first year etc. The medication hasn't provided me with relief. I just want there to be some learning from this. I feel really alone in my symptoms. Given new medication today and a number for the office but just wonder why this has taken so long.

All care has been under the same clinic yet there seems to be no continuity of care for somebody that is struggling both physically and mentally with their symptoms.

Hi firexj99,

Firstly, please can I say thank you for speaking out and providing feedback about your recent experience with the Exeter clinic.

I can hear how frustrating it has been for you to contact us to arrange an appointment, and can understand how, when you're already struggling with symptoms, these difficulties contacting us have compounded the whole problem and made it feel a lot worse. We do sometimes struggle to meet demand with phone calls during particularly busy periods and I can only apologise this affected you on consecutive days recently. If you wanted to visit us again, I would suggest trying the online booking system, which may be easier: https://www.devonsexualhealth.nhs.uk/our-clinics/myphr/ and can be done in an easy and confidential way, without having to explain anything to anyone (unless it is an emergency problem, in which case you may still be advised to call the team for advice).

Due to the confidentiality of the Care Opinion system, I am not able to identify who you are and it would not be appropriate for me to comment further on the details about your appointment in a public forum. However, I would welcome further discussion with you on a confidential basis, if you would like to contact me personally to explore the other comments left about how you feel your care has been managed. We always aim to provide high quality, evidence-based care, that is individualised, and most of all, helpful and kind. It doesn't sound like we have met your expectations and if there is anything we can do to provide additional reassurance to you, I would really appreciate having the discussion. If you'd like to do this, please email me on: ndht.shexeteradmin.nhs.net

Finally, I can let you know that your feedback will be taken on board and discussed by the clinical team, with the aim of making our care better for others in the future. We do want to continually improve and so by providing details about your experiences I can reassure you that your voice has been heard.

Best wishes,
April Brooks
