"Portadown health centre treatment room"

About: Portadown / Treatment rooms

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had blood taken at a pead clinic and on return of his bloods it was found that we needed some parent samples to back his up, we had been spoken about this with our consultant and given the relevant paper work.

The problems started when I tried to book an appointment to have the bloods taken, the GP practice stated they pass bloods onto treatment room and treatment room said they don’t do them and hung up!

On further investigations the treatment room do these blood tests! We made our appointment but I don’t think the person on the phone was too pleased.

On the day of the appointment we attended and was told as our consultant hadn't signed the form the bloods couldn’t be taken! I tried to help out by asking if the bloods could be taken, I would go to the clinic and get the consultant to sign it and drop to the labs in Craigavon on my way back but this was turned down.

The nurse - who was quite rude - told me I could come back in the afternoon but didn’t take into account that we had taken time off work to attend this appointment and wouldn’t be possible.  The sister of the treatment room then stated to the nurse that it’s Thursday and they close.  The sister did mention how important these bloods were but not important enough to take me up on my offer of having the clinic sign and drop off at CAH.

Had either of these members of staff taken into account the enormity of this blood test for our son and our family, they would have understood how stressed out I was about it.  I then had to go and have the bloods taken at another facility where they were more than helpful and kind.

What should have taken me 20 mins turned into a 2.5hr trek, I was stressed and overwhelmed at the attitude of the staff. I’m just glad I don’t have to attend the treatment room too often

Hi em85,

Thank you for sharing your story. I would like apologise for your recent experience in Portadown Treatment Room.

I am disappointed that the care you received increased the enormity of your personal experience and did not provide you as parents and your son with the support you needed. Our Treatment Room Lead Nurse is to meet with the team to discuss and reflect on your experience, staff attitude and behaviours.

The team will then work on how we could have improved your experience and what action to put in place to prevent this occurring in the future.

If you wish to discuss this further please contact Treatment Room Lead Nurse J McKinney on her work mobile- 07745201436 or myself on my work number 07395 365163

Thank you

Mark Ryan.

Hi em85

A brief update on the changes we have made.

The Treatment Room Lead Nurse has meet with the Treatment Room team and discussed your experience.

The team have now developed a greater understanding and awareness of the issues you have raised. Our practice have been updated which will help to prevent reoccurrence of your stressful situation, as these bloods will be reserved without a Consultant signature.

Thank you again for bringing this issue to our attention and supporting our commitment to improve our service.

Kind Regards

Mark
