"I can’t believe I was discharged"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Accidents & Emergency

(as a service user),

I was sent to my GP by my work and GP advised I was to attend immediately. My GP apologised that they were sending me on one of the busiest days of the week.

I arrived at Antrim ED at 6pm. The place was busy but I’ve seen it busier. I was triaged within a short time by a fantastic nurse who took my bloods with no pain associated (my veins wouldn’t be good). At 12md I went to Reception to just check I hadn’t missed my name. I was informed it was 10-hour wait (I felt as if I was  bothering reception staff  by asking politely). That would bring me up to 4am.

At 12.30ish obs were cheeked by nurse who told me when I said you are busy to get myself a comfortable seat as it’s going to be a long wait. Sorry I have to say no comfortable seats in ED, I thought to myself.

At 2am a lovely pleasant aux gave out refreshments and told us they would do obs but that didn’t mean we were being seen .

At 6am I was called by a lovely junior doctor. They were lovely and apologised for the wait. I was tired by this stage. I got a chest x-ray, the doctor explained it although I was somewhat tired. I asked about d dim  and they told me it was normal. They informed me of my very raised CRP, I thought they said 220 but 218. They weren't happy with my oxygen scores but the nurse - who had told me to get comfortable - overruled and said you get it on ear lobe. I was discharged with antibiotic.  Nine days later l‘m still not right.

lf I went to any other hospital I think I would have been admitted. I can’t believe I was discharged with this CRP.

I would like to say that I observed approx six young people who were brought in individually with 2-3,PSNi officers during the night, while no one was called from waiting area from 2-5am or even 12-5am.

Thank you for the feedback. I'm sorry you had such a long wait to be seen-this is not what we wish for patients attending the ED. Whilst we endeavor to see patients as quickly as possible, unfortunately some patients experience lengthy waits due to the volume and acuity of patients attending ED.

Regards,

Gerry

I would hope that someone with such high CRP would be admitted in the future instead of discharged. Over a week later it has come down to almost normal, but I'm still not recovered from it.
