"I will be forever grateful for the way my wife was dealt with"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance Victoria Hospital (Kirkcaldy) Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Victoria Hospital / Colorectal Unit Victoria Hospital / Endoscopy Victoria Hospital / Surgical High Dependency

(as a relative),

My wife had been feeling unwell for at least 6 months if not longer. She was regularly having bouts of sickness and diarrhoea. After 3 days in bed, I was so concerned about her I rang NHS24 who were arranging a doctor to come out to see her. Whilst waiting for the doctor she took a turn for the worse and her vomit was black at this stage. She was so weak I had to carry her from the bathroom back to bed.

The paramedics were very concerned and insisted she needed taking into A&E at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy thank goodness we took their advice. Her blood level haemoglobin was 52. She was in A&E all night before being transferred to Surgical High Dependancy Unit, she received 2 units of blood (blood transfusion).

An Endoscopy was performed and capped off a small ulcer and a large ulcer with three clips. The consultant advised and arranged a further procedure to go into a vein in her groin that led to the ulcer in her stomach and capped the artery off to reduce/remove the chance of a further bleed. Once the Consultant was happy with the outcome my wife was transferred to ward 44.

I cannot praise the staff highly enough at all stages of her care - the doctors, consultants, nurses, auxiliaries, paramedics, were so professional and kind to her.

I will be forever grateful for the way my wife was dealt with, they definitely saved her life and it was only after 4 blood transfusions that she was finally allowed home. Even at this stage her blood count is only 89, hopefully the iron infusion will help push the count upwards.

The biggest part of this story for me is the high standard of care she received and the most professional and kind way she was dealt with from the moment the ambulance arrived until her discharge. Thank you.
