"Very poor care - I couldn't leave my vulnerable son"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Hairmyres / Acute Medical Receiving Unit (AMRU) University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My profoundly disabled son was admitted to Hairmyers recently by ambulance to Accident and Emergency. Both ambulance and A&E staff were fantastic. My son was quickly diagnosed with influenza B. The Doctor in A & E wanted him kept in overnight as his temperature was very high and fluctuating .

My son was transferred to ward 3 at 5pm where things went rapidly downhill. On arrival I was told what a bad day the nurse was having and they would come back and do a check. More than 5 hours later the check had still not been done. I requested pain relief and got it eventually 1hr and 15 mins later after telling staff I was taking my son home where I could give him better care.

The nurse allocated to my son didn't even know he was a wheelchair user and couldn't walk. Due to the complete chaos in the ward and not having seen a doctor since his transfer. I am still at the hospital and can't foresee me getting home tonight. I couldn't leave my vulnerable son in I feel, such an incompetent environment.

Dear DGN03

Thank you for sharing your story. It sounds like you are going through quite an ordeal and I am sure that Hairmyres will respond quickly.

I am glad that you found the ambulance crew and A&E to be fantastic.

Once all this is over, if you would like me to pass on your thanks to the ambulance crew, may I ask that you contact our Patient Experience Team at sas.feedback@nhs.scot with your name, your Care Opinion name, your son's name and the address and date we attended.

I do hope things get sorted and that he is feeling better soon.

Kind regards

David

Dear DGN03

Thank you for taking the time to chat this morning and discuss your concerns. I would again like to apologise that communication was poor and that staff had not taken the time to get to know your son.

I am pleased to know that you felt that staff had spoken to you today and discussed the plans fwith you and your son. Feedback is so important and communication is essential, even more so when we have vulnerable loved ones. The staff will reflect on your feedback and this will be used to make improvements going forward.

I am pleased to know that your son is more settled and thank you again for taking time to discuss.

Kind regards

Lise
