I noticed that my bad chest cough was getting worse. I woke up and found that my breathing was becoming laboured, which was very unusual for me.
I decided to go to the my local surgery. I appreciated that there was a chance I wouldn't be seen as I hadn't made an appointment.
However the lovely and quick thinking Receptionist (Alison) realised I was really struggling and quickly intervened - I was seen immediately by the Senior Nurse Suzanne, Dr Hewitt and a locum Doctor (sorry, can't remember her name), who were all marvellous! They gave me a thorough assessment including an ECG, blood oxygen levels, blood pressure, pulse etc.
They very quickly realised the issue was with my blood oxygen levels. An ambulance was called and I arrived in Perth Royal Infirmary to be quickly moved to the High Dependency Unit, where I stayed for 8 days. Long story short my lungs collapsed and I was really struggling to breathe, with oxygen falling to c 85 at one point. It was 'touch and go'.
In short I think the exceptional care and quick thinking I received by Alison, Suzanne and Dr Hewitt and the Locum Doctor may well have saved my life.
I will be forever grateful!
