"Robot assisted total hysterectomy"

About: Gynaecology / Gynaecology & Early Pregnancy Inpatients (Ward 36) Gynaecology / Gynaecology Services Area 3

(as the patient),

Having been diagnosed with Grade 1 endometrial cancer early this year, it was decided that a complete hysterectomy was necessary. This operation was performed at Ninewells Hospital .

I was admitted 7.30 am, in theatre around 9 am, in recovery and back on the ward at lunchtime with an offer of tea and toast! Obviously that day I was closely monitored by the nursing team and Dr Ragupathy had phoned my husband to say all had gone according to plan. One night in hospital! Next day, up and about mainly going to the toilet. Felt a bit sore and uncomfy because I had some internal stitches but could ask for painkillers when needed. Saw Dr Ragupathy that morning who answered any questions and checked out a few things. By tea time I was home!

Next day, I was up and about able to shower and dress myself. Could not believe how well I felt and what I could do (the Dr did say to keep moving!) Important not to do too much, sleep and rest when need to and have time for oneself. It was lovely to go out just for a short walk, breathe the fresh air and have a coffee!  Two weeks on the soreness had gone, small cuts along the abdomen healing, had a phone call to say no further treatment needed...but I'm not digging the garden yet!

The care and support has been exemplary from start to finish. Yes, I have had to travel between Dundee, Perth, Strathcathro Hospitals and local clinics but found this necessary if I wanted my problem sorted and was prepared to do this.

Many thanks go out to the staff working at all these places who tirelessly work their way through each day with dedication and purpose. Thanks also to the staff on Ward 36, Ninewells Hospital for pre and post op care. Also to Dr Kalpana Ragupathy, her team of doctors and theatre staff for making me feel positive about the procedure...and finally (feels a bit like the Baftas)...

Thanks to the Robot!!

Dear vulpeculahw87,

My name is Martha and I am the Charge Nurse on Ward 36. Thank you so much for taking the time to provide this lovely feedback, it has honestly brightened my day!

I am so glad to hear that you felt cared for and about your speedy discharge and recovery. I will ensure to forward your thanks and feedback to Dr Ragupathy (and the robot).

We hope you continue to recover quickly and can get out digging in the garden soon.

All the best,

Martha
