"The type of dedication that makes the NHS"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Accident & Emergency (Emergency Care) Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Surgical Paediatrics (Children's Surgery)

(as a service user),

My son recently fell and broke his arm.

Initially we were told an ambulance was on its way but later found our call had been surpassed by higher priorities and we would be waiting 2 hours outside with his arm broken. This was unfortunate and a bit distressing but understand there will be higher priorities.

We drove to RACH A&E where the care was exceptional. Like swarm serving at a table in a restaurant we were swarmed by staff only too willing to help. I can’t remember all their names but Sophie (nurse), Jess (student nurse) were excellent in looking after him and apologies I can’t remember the names of the other wonderful staff. They helped to calm my son and gave him pain relief.

He couldn’t have been in 15 minutes before he was taken to x-ray and within an hour had seen an orthopaedic doctor (Dr Gardener) and was on the list for surgery. He was then fasted and taken to surgery 6 hours later (only due to having to fast). Ms Pease the consultant met us as we were heading up to the ward and explained the surgery. He had his surgery and was back to the ward - all of this having happened in 8 hours.

The care from the staff in A&E was exceptional and we can’t thank the orthopaedic surgeon and her team enough for the prompt care particularly as I understand it was close to the changeover of staff and some may even have stayed later to do the surgery. It is this type of dedication that makes the NHS.

Once on the ward he was checked on every couple of hours and looked after with such care. I didn’t catch the names of the nurses on the ward but again they were marvellous in their treatment of my son and me. We got home the following lunchtime and can’t express our thanks to the team throughout the hospital for taking such good care of us throughout our time with them.

Thank you so much for this lovely feedback. I trust your son is recovering well after his injury. It means so much to staff to hear from those they care for, that they have done a good job. This type of feedback helps reinforce the positive impact they have and shows how valued they are. I have passed on your comments to the general teams involved and those individuals you have mentioned. If you wish to e-mail your son's name (sue.danby@nhs.scot) then I can ensure all those individuals who helped care for him get the feedback and know how appreciated they are.
