"Poor communication between teams"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Diabetes Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Gynaecology Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Maternity care

(as the patient),

It started with a missed etopic pregnancy. After being in A&E with pain, I was saying to the gynaecology team that I think it's ectopic, to be told no, it's a miscarriage with no scan.

A week later, still in pain. I returned to the hospital and told it was an ectopic pregnancy that had ruptured with internal bleeding. Under 3 hours of walking in the door, I was having major surgery that could have been avoided and the loss of a fallopian tube. It was heart breaking and so lonely that I suffered for a week in pain to then be told I was right.

Thankfully a month later, still scared, I fell pregnant. After going in for an early scan at 5 weeks I thought, this is good I will get care. Fast forward to 10 weeks I had to contact the midwife team as the scan team in Dumfries didn't pass my details on to say I had been for a scan so I had been missed off the system again (previously happened with my 1st pregnancy). The midwife team rushed to get me in for a check-up with them. They did brilliant.

My pregnancy was with filled with loneliness and dread as I had developed Gestational diabetes for my midwife to contact me asking if I had a growth scan at 28 weeks. They chased this up to be told the diabetes team had not contacted the hospital for my growth scans and the hospital was unaware I had the diabetes.

It's becoming a common theme in Dumfries and Galloway hospital not to communicate between teams. I couldn't fault my midwife as she was happy to listen to me and would try and keep me calm as I had lost a lot of trust in the NHS waiting to be let down again.

At 36 weeks I had another growth scan to be told they could see fluid on the brain. My husband and I got taken to a room to discuss that the information would be passed to Queen Elizabeth in Glasgow for a 2nd opinion. The head nurse that delivered the information couldn't answer many of our questions when asked, when we left we felt lost and feared of the outcome of our baby. I contacted the midwife to ask her about it and she reassured us it won't be anything to worry about and they can help.

When arriving at Glasgow 3 days after being told the news we got a good outcome and our baby was OK and there was no concern. Glasgow said if the person in Dumfries wasn't on maternity who could have given us a 2nd opinion we could have been able to know the news sooner rather than wait and cause so much stress as the 2nd opinion wasn't covered.

I was booked in for a C section after everything that happened for the past year I was filled with dread something would go wrong. Once I was in on my day it was calm, relaxing and felt like they listened to my concerns and fear. I couldn't fault the delivery/theatre team and my midwife as they have done a brilliant job trying to keep me calm and no filled with dread.
