"They refused to answer my questions"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

I took my new born son to our medical centre in Glasgow for his six week check up. I expressed to the Doctor that I was concerned about him catching covid as cases were particularly high at that point.

Their response was to tell me that lockdown was harmful for children - I said that I knew this, and didn’t want lockdown. I wanted my son to be able to access the covid vaccine, which he is not eligible for on the NHS and cannot access privately. I do not know of any other safe vaccines for children that cannot be accessed either privately or through the NHS. For reasons that I don’t understand.

I felt the Doctor became very hostile and told me that my son was bound to get covid and said that they were not worried for their own children. I asked if they could explain why they weren’t worried for their own children, as having the opinion of a medical professional as to why covid is no longer dangerous would have been helpful for me, but they refused to answer my questions.

I said that I had read worrying studies about the dangers of repeated covid infections and asked if they could say something about this to help me understand, but they shut me down and refused to explain why they felt these dangers aren’t real. I left the appointment in tears.

This was an especially vulnerable moment for me and I felt the Doctors hostility was bizarre. They minimised my concerns, whilst also refusing to provide me with any information as to why covid is apparently no longer a threat.

Dear Not a regular mon

I am sorry to hear about your experience with your GP and that you have been left feeling dismissed and left with unanswered questions.

GP practices in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde operate their own feedback and complaints systems and are not registered to respond to feedback received via Care Opinion. As the GP practice will not be able to see this feedback can I suggest that you contact the Practice Manager to discuss these issues directly?

The Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS) may also be able to support you with this issue. This is an independent and confidential organisation. PASS can help you give feedback, raise concerns or make a complaint about any health service, including GP practices.

You can contact PASS on 0800 917 2127 or visit their website at Patient Advice & Support Service | Citizens Advice Scotland (www.cas.org.uk ).

Update posted by Not a regular mom (the patient)

Hi Nicole

Thanks for your response. In my experience, making complaints of the NHS via either PASS or through the GP surgery itself doesn’t work - I just get responses explaining why the providers behaviour was actually totally fine. This is disheartening and distressing for me, and I don’t want to put myself through that process only to be told that I have no basis for complaint.

The link you shared regarding the covid vaccine for children is broken, but in any case, I’ve already looked into this issue and as I said above, my son is not eligible to receive the covid vaccine on the NHS. The covid vaccine will soon be available privately, but only for those 12 years and over, so he is also not able to access it privately. The overwhelming majority of children in the UK are unvaccinated against Covid and unable to access the vaccine at all. Children are at risk of serious illness and long covid, and in my opinion should be able to get vaccinated to reduce their risk. There is no other vaccine that is denied to children in this way - even the chicken pox vaccine is available privately.
