Glasgow City Council Health and Social Care Partnership provide a care service to my elderly mother, 4 times each day. This is at my home, where she is currently living, as she has dementia and is bed bound due to mobility issues.
Yesterday, following the dinner visit, my home was left unsecured as the carer did not lock the door when they left. Security is paramount; my mum would be unable to call for help, if an intruder entered the house. When I arrived home 2 hours after the carers left, and found the door unlocked, I checked the 'ring' doorbell and could see that no attempt had been made to lock the door.
The carers regularly use the front or side door to enter and leave the house, as I work full time. When the carers arrived for their final visit, I pointed out that the door had not been locked at the previous visit. The carer who had been last to leave informed me that it was not their responsibility to lock the door, and that I should not have gone out.
I am very concerned at this revelation, as I have always trusted that the safety of a vulnerable person would be a priority, and that my home would be left secure. I would therefore like some clarity regarding the following:
a) who is responsible for securing a home, following care delivery?
b) am I expected to be present each time care is provided? I work full time; this would mean I am also expected to give up work?
c) who is responsible for the impact on my mum's health, should an intruder enter an unsecured home?
d) who is responsible for any criminal damage/theft, should an intruder enter an unsecured home?
On leaving my home the carer reiterated to their colleague that it was not their responsibility to lock my door, and that I shouldn't have gone out. This conversation was recorded by the 'ring' doorbell.
