I recently attended an outpatient appointment at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.
It was my first time at the Beatson and I found the building quite disorientating, being in the form of a circle. Some of the signs confused me (like signs for outpatient check-in which were no longer valid - it took me to the Aroma café on both the ground floor and first floor). I felt like I should have worn a big badge saying “This is my first time here”. People were understanding when I explained that I felt a bit lost, both in the physical sense and generally feeling overwhelmed by the whole experience.
I also struggled to find the exit. My appointment and tests lasted 2 hours and I desperately needed to get out once it was over. The only exit I could find had a sign that it was open in daytime hours only. Thankfully it was still open because I was feeling quite panicky by that point and I couldn't see any other way out.
