"Appendicectomy"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / General surgery (Wards 9a, 9b, 9c & 9d)

(as a service user),

Severe pain in right lower abdomen. Called 111. Took about 60 minutes for answer. Eventually spoke to a nurse who suggested I continue taking paracetamol. I said I wasn't happy with that. 10min later got a call from a Doctor. They quickly arranged an appointment with a GP. In 40 minutes saw the Dr. Diagnosed likely appendicitis. They made arrangements for me to be seen at Acute Surgery QEH and gave me a letter. All very efficient.

Had CT scan confirming urgent appendicectomy required. Was operated on first thing next morning.

Excellent care by all QEH staff. Have bade a good recovery.

The 111 service requires attention. Very slow telephone response. Poor assessment by triage nurse.

Dear Bill78

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion. I am sorry to learn of your experience when you contacted the 111 service, this must have been extremely frustrating for you.

NHS 24 are aware that at times, due to demand, wait times to access the 111 service are longer than we would like and absolutely appreciate this is not a good experience when people are worried or anxious about their health or that of a loved one. Please be assured we are working hard to improve this by ensuring our systems and processes are as efficient as possible. Patient safety and a positive patient/caller experience remain our top priority

I read your story with concern and would like the opportunity to review your contact with NHS 24. If you would be kind enough to contact our Patient Experience Team to provide some additional detail, we could look into this further for you.

You can contact NHS 24’s Patient Experience Team at Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk.

Thank you again for sharing your story. I am pleased to hear you are recovering well and that you received excellent care whilst in hospital.

With best wishes

Stephanie
