"A complete lack of interest from my GP"

About: Middlewich Road Surgery

(as the patient),

I thought that my symptoms were related to poor hypothyroid management. After a routine blood test it was discovered that my B12 level was very low.

My GP offered no advice and didn't comment on it in any way, other than "your B12 is a bit low." They were aware of most of the symptoms I was having but didn't ask any questions. I was not offered any treatment despite guidelines to the contrary.

I looked into the result to see if there was anything that I could do to get my levels up and realised that the symptoms I was experiencing were possibly caused by low B12. Depression, confusion, memory issues, restless leg, tinnitus, peripheral nerve pain, IBS.......I started to treat myself following the NHS protocol ignored by the GP. I had to learn to self inject and buy the injectable B12 online from Germany, as many others do.This is no way to manage a common, but potentially devastating, problem that can be easily and cheaply treated.

My symptoms started to improve almost immediately, and I feel that I'm nearly in a position to maintain my B12 rather than treat symptoms. I'm lucky that it has only taken me 6 months to get to this point, and I'm hopeful that my final symptoms will continue to improve.

I can now review any outstanding symptoms in relation to my thyroid treatment to get back to where I was before the NHS stopped my T3 medication for cost reasons.

I changed my GP.
