"A ruptured cyst and losing my ovary."

About: Gynaecology / Gynaecology & Early Pregnancy Inpatients (Ward 36) Gynaecology / Gynaecology Assessment Unit Gynaecology / Gynaecology Services Area 3

(as the patient),

I was assessed by the Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU) team in Ninewells and saw a doctor who scanned me and told me there was no reason for my pain. They said everything looked normal and I would be fine with some rest and fluids despite my pulse being in the 150’s and being doubled over in pain. I expressed my concerns and was met with a cold response and told my scan was normal, and there was no clinical reason for me to be there.

Fast forward 4 hours and I was still experiencing this pain and knew something wasn’t right. I called ward 36 and was told to just take paracetamol and have a bath, if it wasn’t better by morning to call my GP for stronger painkillers.

I knew going back to Ninewells was going to do me no good so we drove to another hospital 2 hours away, where I was admitted, and in surgery 1 hour 40 minutes after arriving for a ruptured cyst that resulted in me losing my ovary.

As soon as I arrived, they performed a scan and saw it right away, they said they have no idea how the doctor at Ninewells didn’t see that and if they had, my ovary would have been saved. So thanks to the incredibly rude and dismissive nursing staff on the GAU unit and the doctor who saw me and claimed there was nothing wrong, I was left to suffer for another 6 hours and lost my ovary. I will never return to Ninewells again after this.

My name is Denise Marshall, I am the Senior Charge Nurse for Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy Outpatient Services.

I am so sorry to hear of the experience you had.

In order to ensure that we improve our services, I need to investigate this further and would really welcome the opportunity to get more detail of you and your experience so that I can identify when you attended.

I wonder if you can possibly make contact with myself or my charge nurse, Lorna Donald. We are available on extension 40023, if you call the Main Switchboard at Ninewells on 01382 660111 and then ask for/type in this extension number.

Alternatively, if you do not wish to speak with myself or Lorna directly, you can email our Patient Experience Team, on TAY.feedback@nhs.scot or you can call them on 0800 027 5507.
