"They provided care and compassion in a wholly professional way"

About: Musgrave Park Hospital (Belfast) Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency Royal Victoria Hospital / Trauma & Orthopaedics Whiteabbey Hospital / Day Rehabilitation Unit DRU

(as the patient),

I fell while shopping in a Belfast store.

An ambulance was called but in the 90 min waiting I got really cold

Eventually the team arrived and couldn’t have been nicer, they correctly suspected a broken leg and dislocated shoulder and gave me pain relief as they removed my coat and got me into hospital.

They did their best to get me in, although the ambulances were queueing. I spent about 24+hours in A&E in Royal then got moved to a ward - hip fracture, dislocated shoulder but also shoulder fracture

Surgery postponed a few times but eventually done so left for Musgrave Park after 6 days awaiting assessment. After about 4 or 5 days I  was moved to Whiteabbey for rehab. I spend 13 nights there and received wonderful care, lots of physio and I made good progress before eventually being discharged to the liaison team in the community.

I can only praise the NHS - although under great pressure which was evident to all, they provided care and compassion in a wholly professional way. I will be forever grateful for the attention I received

Dear Esther427,

My name is Linsey Sheerin Divisional Nurse for Urgent and Emergency Care at Belfast Trust. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion and recognising the care and compassion shown by staff. Please do not under estimate the impact your kind words for have, I will ensure that they are shared with the team.

I am sincerely sorry for the delays you experienced both waiting in the ambulance and to be transferred into the department. Unfortunately at times, the entire Health and Social Care system remains under significant pressure. No patient should experience delays waiting on an ambulance, in an ambulance and in the Emergency Department. You have been very gracious in describing your experience.

I hope that you are continuing to make good progress and are currently well.

Linsey

Good morning, Esther427

Thank you for taking the time to share your valued feedback. We are always grateful to those who share their experiences of the services they have received. It was reassuring to hear of the compassionate and professional care administered by the crew.

With regards to our response times please be assured that we are working closely with the Department of Health and the Strategic Planning and Performance Group to increase our available resources. We are also working with the local EDs to try to ensure that our patients can be handed over to hospital clinical teams as quickly as possible so that ambulances are able to respond to further emergencies.

I wish you a speedy recovery

Best wishes
