"Risk reduction mastectomy and reconstruction"

About: Perth Royal Infirmary / General Surgery Plastic Surgery & Burns / Breast Reconstruction Specialist Nurse Service

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer 5 years ago. During my chemotherapy I suffered from a blood clot and so my original cancer surgery was limited to a wide local excision (lumpectomy).  Unfortunately as I finished my original treatment covid struck and so delayed risk reducing surgery. However, After further tests it was felt to be safe for me to proceed with the original plan.

I was planning to have a DIEP flap but then the plastics team mentioned the possibility of pre pectoral implants. The Breast reconstruction nurses were very helpful, knowledgable and kind and explained the procedure to me and what to expect afterwards. I then saw Mr Vinci in clinic, who again was kind, down to earth and explained the pros and cons. I decided to go ahead and was admitted to ward 7 Perth Royal Infirmary in November 2023 for my surgery. The ward was clean, quiet and pleasant. The staff were very helpful, especially overnight. My visit to theatre was made so much easier by the friendly, chatty staff there.

My final result has been way better than expected and I am so pleased I went ahead with this. Everyone has been excellent.
