"Felt extremely well looked after by the multidisciplinary team"

About: Maternity care / Delivery Suite The Ulster Hospital / Maternity

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

In November 2023, I was brought in for induction before delivering my baby. I was looked after in the maternity ward afterwards. I have felt extremely well looked after by the multidisciplinary team. The team have made excellent clinical decisions that have ensured that I was kept safe and my baby was delivered safely. I felt that the teams worked really well together as I moved from one area to another and as staff had to handover to each other. My husband was also well looked after in his role and kept informed of my progress. Staff took time to listen to us, day and and night as we were nervous new parents.

I have seen a range of medical staff who were really kind, caring and reassuring but it has been the midwifery team that have carried out the majority of my day to day care as an inpatient. The team led by Jenny were amazing and I wish that I could recall more of their names to say thank you properly. Staff supported me with my goal to breast feed and provided much help, advice and practical support.  I have felt extremely well looked after, with the midwives enduring all my medical issues were taken care of and I had been reviewed medically when required.

I really value the time that staff took to talk to me and their emotional support throughout the admission. The midwifery team is stretched and there were many times when they were dealing with complications and serious clinical issues. They would love to spend more time with individuals when this simply isn’t possible due to the pressures of the service.

I also really value the day to day individual tasks that also form a big part of my inpatient care in maternity- the tea and toast, getting pump items sterilised, getting the be changed or help with bathing our baby.

I did feel that staff were often having to bleed for medical cover in the middle of the night due to staffing. I would love there to be more medical cover so that medical staff are there in the department more often so that they do not need to be bleeped from other areas that are also important.

Dear Belfast,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby. I will pass your kind words onto Jenny and rest of multidisciplinary team and we appreciate the time you have taken to post this positive feedback. The teams strive to ensure that women are treated in a kind and compassionate manner and it is important to them that they are able to support you during and after the birth of your baby.

I hope you and your baby are both doing well and have made a full recovery from the birth. Once again thank you for taking the time to post this lovely feedback.

Kindest Regards

Sarah
