"My only problem has been my time spent in A&E corridor"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Elective Overnight Stay Centre/Gynaecology Ward Daisy Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I have been a patient on Female Surgical for the past 10 days, the care I have received on this ward has been exceptional, and I would have no complaints. The staff are very kind and professional especially nurses Timtu, Bernie and Teresa to name but a few.

My only problem has been my time spent in A&E, this consisted of 3 days on a corridor in a recycling chair, with little to no sleep. As a corridor is quite narrow doctors and nurses where walking up and down all night. I came into A&E on a Friday and because I needed a MRI I had to wait until Monday, I did suggest I go home and come back in on Monday, but I was told I would get put to the bottom of the list if I were to do this.

I had a previous MRI from the Belfast trust which the Southern Trust would not accept. Surely if I were to go home on Friday and come back on Monday this would save both time and money looking after me, and plus I could rest at home.

There is no doubt you should not have had to remain in the corridor until an inpatient bed was made available on the ward. You correctly highlight the lack of privacy and tranquility for sleep. Once the emergency department Doctor decides you need admitted they refer you to the inpatient medical team of Doctors. They will usually assess their patients in ED and confirm if admission or an alternative pathway is required. If there are no beds their nursing staff use recliner chairs on a corridor close to the emergency department as a holding area for patients waiting admission. Unfortunately emergency departments throughout Northern Ireland and UK frequently have a significant number of patients delayed waiting on admission beds.

We are sorry for your experience and hope you are recovering.
