"I had more freedom in prison than this hospital"

About: Hammersmith & Fulham Mental Health Unit / Askew (PICU) Ward

(as a service user),

Some night shift staff often fall asleep in the office. I suffer insomnia and during the night they refuse to allow me in the OT room to use the PlayStation or other facilities.

Whenever I approach the office to ask for something I am treated as if I am a burden. I am always asked to wait for them to finish their notes.

The culture is mostly overseas staff and it's difficult to communicate with them as we are speaking different dialects. There should be more staff on the ward that speak English as a first language. I am unable to communicate with a lot of staff effectively because they don't understand me. This just a general observation.

The policies are too restrictive. I'm unable to smoke regularly. HCAs won't let me keep toiletries in my bedroom. I have to consistently beg for my property and again treated like a burden when I'm constantly asking for my property because they won't just let me keep it in my room.

Why do they have a problem with me having shower gel, shampoo and moisturiser in my bedroom? It makes no sense.

Unable to have a phone charger in my room because the cables are too long. I have to beg to have my phone charged. The hospital should provide short cables for patients.

There is more freedom in Prison than there is in this hospital. In prison I had a television and kettle in my cell. In hospital we have nothing.

I hope you take this information seriously.
