I received DIT after the sudden breakdown of my long term marriage which resulted in suicidal thoughts, anxiety, depression and a chaotic, unpredictable environment.
The sessions looked at my history of being overly fearful, anxiously preoccupied with relationships and fear of abandonment, and exploring how many of my behaviours were developed during an inconsistent childhood.
This helped me to understand how my history had contributed to an unhealthy dynamic in my relationship. It enabled me to confront and work on rectifying these behaviours - passivity, people pleasing, fawning, preoccupation, enmeshment and emotional outbursts.
It also shone a light on the unhealthy behaviours of my partner that I had tolerated for a very long time in the hope of keeping the relationship and family together at the expense of my mental health.
The counsellor provided an objective, unbiased viewpoint on the situation. She was not phased by some of the sensitive information I shared and was quite firm and shone a spotlight on aspects of my behaviour that I had been unwilling to confront.
I finished the sessions in a far better mental place and situation. I have been able to speak up for myself and move my situation to a place of far greater certainty, asserting my opinions and clearly expressing my boundaries. I still have more healing to do, but feel excited and positive about my future with greater stability and a plan for the future.
