I was referred by my GP to Surgical ambulatory care at Hairmyres Hospital as I had a UTI which didn't seem to be clearing & she thought the infection might have spread to my pancreas.
I waited around 5 hours for my blood test results & to see a doctor. I then had to return the next day for an ultrasound & to see a doctor again. This involved another 4 hour wait for a medic to attend the surgical ambulatory care unit. There were plenty of nurses around but they did not seem to be able to make any clinical decisions & so every patient had to wait until a doctor became available from another department.
I know emergency services are very stretched but I wonder if the service was organised better it could run more efficiently.
I attended the equivalent service at Ayr Hospital a few weeks later with my aunt & the department was run by advanced practice nurses overseen by one doctor although specialists were also requested as necessary. This reduced the waiting time as the staff were dedicated to the department & not covering various areas which was the case at Hairmyres.
My aunt had a DVT & was assessed, diagnosed & treated within 2 hours without even seeing a doctor. All her care was by very competent & efficient nurses.
"Better organisation needed to run more efficiently."
