"Left waiting in ambulance"

About: Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

Wife fell on the stairs and had a bad break and dislocation of ankle. Helpless. Hope she gets taken out of the ambulance and brought into the hospital for treatment soon she was suffering in pain.

Phoned for an ambulance in the early morning, they arrived after two hours. Provided pain relief and set for travel.

A&E busy - so she at time of writing was with the paramedics in ambulance another two hours later, still no developments.

Good morning, Johnmx23

I am grateful to you for taking the time to share your experiences of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. As an organisation we aim to consistently show compassion, professionalism and respect for the patients we care for, we regret that this was not the experience for you and your wife.

With regards to our response times please be assured that we are working closely with the Department of Health and the Strategic Planning and Performance Group to increase our available resources. We are also working with local Emergency departments to try and ensure that our patients can be handed over to hospital clinical teams as quickly as possible so that ambulances are able to respond to further emergencies.

I wish your wife a speedy recovery.

Yours sincerely

Neil

Dear Johnmx23,

My name is Linsey Sheerin, I am the Divisional Nurse responsible for Urgent and Emergency Care at Belfast Adult Emergency Departments. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion. I am sincerely sorry for the delays that you and your wife experienced following her fall.

Despite staff working tirelessly to provide timely care, pressures across the entire Health and Social Care system can directly impact capacity within our Emergency Departments. Unfortunately, your wife experienced this with the delays in her care. As Neil has said, we are continuing to work with our NIAS colleagues to improve clinical handover times so that ambulances can return to service as quickly as possible.

I sincerely hope that your wife is currently well and making good progress in her recovery.

Linsey
