"I will never have this procedure again without anaesthetic"

About: Benenden Hospital Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

Worst experience ever. I will say I have developed panic disorder recently but I am on medication for it. I had been previously waiting a year for this procedure which the NHS then transferred me to a private hospital because I had been waiting so long.  The surgeon I am under could not look at other surgery due without this procedure done. So I was determined to get it done to push my surgery along. I have had every other type of procedures with cameras and never had any issues.

The nurses I first dealt with were thorough, informative for every stage of the procedure and nice. They knew what medication I was taking and why and knew I was very nervous. I opted for sedation and was told I could have that and the throat spray.

Firstly it took 2 staff to put a cannula in my hands. Both are bruised. I was given the throat spray two pumps which tasted disgusting but I was warned by staff before.

A lovely staff member instructed me to lay down on my left side and breath calmly. I closed my eyes from this point and tried to stay calm. The female nurse put the mouth guard in. All I know next was grappling and retching and the alarms going off on the machine. The nurse was telling me to be calm but I couldn't stop retching, gagging trying to pull it out my mouth but being held. I came round in a ward on my own. A nurse came and talked to me about who was picking me up and giving me my results. I walked to my husband with the nurse. I felt traumatised. When I got in the car my husband told me to look at my eyes. They were both filled with blood and I had broken capillaries around my eyes and face too. I will never have this procedure again unless I am out completely. They did find a sliding hiatal hernia in my oesophagus so that solved some symptoms. I have an umbilical hernia also.

I am very sorry to hear about your experience - it must have been frightening. I would appreciate it is you could contact my team using this email: ekhuft.patientvoice@nhs.net so we can follow this up the appropriate team, as it seems this happened at a private hospital, but through the NHS. We can then look into who can respond to this at the hospital where you had this procedure.

Our aim is to get you some answers and discuss how we can support you, should you have a procedure like this in future at one our our hospitals.

Best wishes
