"Wishaw maternity and neonatal unit"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24) University Hospital Wishaw / Neo-natal Intensive Care

(as a service user),

I was booked for an induction on my due date. This was slow to progress and I went into labour two days later. Throughout this I was well looked after and the consultant reassured me as I was nervous about the length of time it was taking, and the potential of being sent home or restarting the process. She was aware that I had had bad hospital experiences before, including visits to the early pregnancy unit in the past, and that I was not keen to stay in hospital any longer than necessary.

My labour was also slow to progress, but again I was looked after well by student midwife, Kirsten, midwife Fionnula and various other midwives but I sadly can't recall all the names! My daughter was born in an awkward position which lead to me panicking that something was wrong, but I was reassured throughout and our daughter finally arrived.

I was treated for retained placenta as I was not able to deliver this, and received an epidural for this to be removed.  By this point I was exhausted, but I can't thank all the staff enough for their care and reassurance through out - Seamus the anaesthetist, all the medical staff involved, and the English female consultant whose name I wish I could recall! It went well, was painless and I was kept informed throughout and had no issues as I recovered.

I happily went home the next day but unfortunately my daughter was readmitted to the neonatal unit at 3 days old for an infection. They suspect she may have picked up group b strep from me, or some other unknown infection. The doctors, including Moya, and all of the nurses, took great care of her and offered much needed to support to my husband and I.

We are both extremely grateful for the care and support that we received from all of the fantastic NHS staff we encountered, who don't get enough credit for the difficult and stressful jobs they do! Thank you all very much for taking such great care of our family!

Dear foxtrottr43,

Thank you for sharing your experience of University Hospital Wishaw, Maternity Care and Neo-natal Intensive Care.

Firstly congratulations on the birth of your daughter! I am so pleased to hear that although worried about staying in hospital due to previous negative experiences, you were very well looked after and supported throughout your induction and labour.

I can only imagine how frightening your complication of retained placenta and the subsequent infection that your daughter suffered would be and I am so pleased that you felt reassured and supported throughout this.

I will share your lovely words and positive feedback with the whole team and I am sure that they will be delighted in hearing how their care and compassion made such a difference to your experience.

I hope you are all settling in well into family life.

Kind Regards,

Jenni
