I was referred to the CGL service in Wisbech by my GP after I sought help for a long standing and severe alcohol addiction. After an initial conversation over the phone I was invited to attend an assessment meeting to discuss the nature and severity of my addiction and to discuss what services where on offer to help me. Almost immediately upon entering the building it became a safe space. From point of contact at reception through to my assessment itself, not once did I feel judged or shamed and for the first time was able to openly discuss, honestly and in full, how far I had fallen into drink. This, in itself, was a massive step on the journey to recovery.
Whilst I did not immerse myself in all the services that where available to me (acupuncture, pastoral etc) I was invited to, and did attend, group therapy sessions. Within a few weeks, these sessions had become one of the foundations from which I started to see the shoots of recovery grow. As I type this I have just returned home from my weekly regular meeting, 11 months sober and clean.
In my case, I trod an individual path through recovery which was somewhat unconventional (no rehab, cold turkey) but can honestly say that without the help of CGL in all manner of ways I dont think my story would have the happy ending that I am hoping will continue to manifest.
Emotionally if you need support, comfort, someone to listen, a safe and non judgemental space then this is where to go. They will also kick your ass if you need to hear a few home truths.
Practically they can help with GP referrals, medical assessments, financials, mental health. If you need help this is the place to start, and I am sure if they cannot provide specifically what you are looking for, they know someone that can.
Watch out for that Adrian and Andrew though, proper shady ;-)
