My son was prescribed midazolam for febrile convulsions. Initially this was issued to us for emergency use by the paediatric ward in Wishaw general.
We were clearly shown how to draw up and administer the medication and were also shown a training video. Myself and my husband were confident with this and felt well equipped to give this if necessary.
When this medicine expired we were issued a sealed orange box from the GP with no instructions or explanation other than the sticker. We did not know what was in the box or how to use it. Luckily we did not have to.
When my son was staring nursery a couple of weeks ago they required a seizure plan due to the medication. They contacted the seizure nurse who did not know my son and had not previously had any dealings with him. In conversation with this nurse it became apparent that the orange box issued for use to my son in the event of a seizure was actually the incorrect dose. It was double what he should have actually got.
This is an error that could have had significant consequences for my son and I would appreciate some kind of explanation/support around this.
We now have the correct dose (thanks to the epilepsy nurses) and have been provided with the training video, which has been extremely helpful. However, this does not take away from the error made by the GP practice that could easily have resulted in my son getting twice as much medicine as he should have.
We have also now seen the neuro specialist for a follow up as a result of contact being made with the epilepsy nurse. Otherwise, my son would have slipped completely through the net.
In addition, my son also has an extremely complex medical history and spent the first weeks of his life in a critical condition in intensive care. I feel that this is unacceptable and does not fill an already very anxious parent with confidence going forward.
