"Lack of access to changing facilities for wheelchair users"

About: Borders General Hospital / Radiology

(as a service user),

I was recently sent for a scan at my local hospital. I had informed them I was a wheelchair user and was assured that this would not be an issue.

I arrived in good time and details were taken. I was then asked to change into a gown but the changing room was not wide enough for my standard wheelchair. I was given the choice of changing in a public area or not having the scan.

I did change with great embarrassment, but then found the scan bed wasn't suitable for anyone with my spinal deformity.

Update posted by duckyduck (a service user)

I have already been in contact with you and was told it was an old hospital and there was nothing to be done. As a result of being the unwilling star of a strip / peep show I have now cancelled further appointments as I get panic attacks even thinking about it. I am not here to be a laughing stock to all and sundry.

I would also add this has happened in both the MRI and CT areas.

I am sorry to hear of your experiences and how this has made you feel. I understand that you have already raised this with staff and was told there was nothing that could be done. I would really like to to be able to look into what has happened and wonder if you would be prepared to contact me direct on either 01896 826714 or by email: susan.cowe@nhs.scot.

Kind regards

Susan
