"New outdoor space"

About: Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick children / Out patients

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter has been in hospital on and off for several months. In the lead up to Christmas we marvelled at the beautiful candy cane Lane with all its balloons from Outpatients leading towards the ward and the lovely outdoor Christmas displays either side of the lane (main corridor) .

Since then a whole new installation has been installed with plants and circular seating right and left of the corridor. It's featured in promotional shots from the trust with the chief executive standing in this wonderful new space. Fantastic!...

Except it's been locked all day long, every day for the last 3 weeks (despite the promo materials for the hospital). Why on earth is anything being featured as launched with the chief exec and we can all see it through the glass, but the kids cannot avail of it night or day?

At present to get my daughter fresh air after a 3 week stay I have to take her to the front doors of the hospital and the fog of smokers and vapers who go unchallenged and unregulated on a smoke free site. Why are the doors to the heavily promoted refurbished outdoor area locked???

Dear Browsertp55,

My name is Trish McKinney and I am the Co-director with responsibility for the Children's Hospital and NISTAR at the BHSCT. Firstly thank you for taking the time to feedback about access to the therapeutic gardens at the Children's Hospital.

We are hopeful that the better weather will encourage more families to use the area and I can confirm that parents can avail of the garden space and access can be sought by approaching any of the ward team or play therapists. I apologise if this was not your experience.

Best wishes

Trish McKinney
