"Excellent care at women’s centre"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I had a robotic hysterectomy and throughout the whole experience, from pre op appointment to discharge I had absolutely first class treatment.

The consultant in charge of doing the operation spent time with me at the pre op explaining the procedure clearly and asking any questions I had. The pre op was thorough and prepared me for the day.

I had the same nurse check me again on the morning of the operation, followed by another with the consultant and anaesthetist. All the staff I came into contact with were so caring and professional and nothing was too small to do for me to make my experience as comfortable as it could be.

I had a comfortable waiting area while I was waiting to be taken to theatre. The only issue being that it was in the dining room, which was a bit rough as I couldn’t eat!!! But it was very comfortable and it was the only one there for a few hours to read and relax.

The doctors and nurses in the room before the operating room were so friendly and calming, including the student anaesthetist. They kept me at ease with chat and being really clear what was happening and why. When I was feeling scared right at the last moment they noticed and reassured me that they would take great care.

After the operation I was woken gently and monitored so carefully, given plenty of pain medication to ensure I was comfortable. My consultant came to see me to let me know that the procedure had been successful.

Overnight I was monitored and cared for in a shared ward with three others. There’s always the inevitable noise of others being checked or beeps etc but the nurses were all so considerate that people needed peace and calm. They offered food and drink at any time and always asked if pain needed managing,

The following day I was seen by multiple doctors and specialist nurses, as well as my consultant who all took time to explain everything I needed to know for my recovery and how I might also feel emotionally.

I was fed some nutritious and filling food for lunch and helped to get clean and packed.

I was sent home with all the information and medication I needed and clear understanding of how to contact the ward if I had any concerns at all.

I am in awe of all of the staff at every level and am sure that the phenomenal care that I received has been the reason that I have recovered so well so far.
