"Broken foot"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department University Hospital Hairmyres / Radiology University Hospital Hairmyres / Trauma & Orthopaedics (Wards 1 & 5)

(as a service user),

I originally injured my foot last year during my work.  I attended A&E on several occasions but with over 8 & 12hrs waiting and 2 young children, I was unable to wait.

I contacted my doctor and got a letter to attend X-ray at Hairmyres hospital. I was told my results would go back to my GP.

I called my GP for my results, to be told that they weren’t yet available. I called again 2 weeks later then 3 weeks later, to be told my results were still not available.  I called Hairmyres, X-ray dept. to be told that the results were sent earlier that month and my GP should have them. I called my GP once and when I called again later that day, I was told that an appt was made for me.

I had my phone call today with a GP, who has told me my foot is broken and that I should be elevating and non weight bearing and apparently being referred to orthopaedics.  My foot is extremely sore and bruised.  I only got my results as I pushed for them and need them for my work ,as I don’t want to be off if I don’t have to be.

I feel this length of time to wait on an x-ray result is completely unacceptable. The results are uploaded immediately, and I think the radiologist should report them the same day, not 3 weeks later. I have now been mobilising on a broken foot for 3 weeks and who know what damage I have done in doing so.

You don’t want people attending A&E if not an emergency, but your other routes of being seen are not working from my experience. I believe I should have been notified that a fracture had been seen the same day. To say I am disappointed is an understatement.

Dear sonanddaughter,

I am really sorry to hear that you have broken your foot and that the delay in getting your results have caused continued pain and swelling as you tried to weight bear. I sincerely hope that, with rest and any treatment from orthopedics that you are able to regain the full use of your foot without pain in the near future.

Unfortunately, we have been experiencing some delays with reporting of xrays referred from GPs. This is due to the sheer volume of reporting workload and available Radiologists and Reporting Radiographers to report these.

Can I please ask you to contact Patient Affairs on 01355 585325 to allow us to look further into this delay.

Yours sincerely

Elaine
