"Travel Vaccinations (Or Lack Thereof)"

About: Central Vaccination Service - Perth & Kinross

(as the patient),

Before I begin, this is not the fault of any individual. Simply a failing of the service.

I recently reached out to the Tayside Vaccination Centre because I am about to move abroad and there are a few recommended vaccines.

I had to wait over an hour on the phone, before speaking to someone to whom I described my situation (Where/When I am going). I was then sent a form to fill out all the same information I had just waited an age to describe on the phone. I send this form back to Tayside Vac Centre and the next day I am told that a clinician will be in touch shortly.

Despite numerous attempts to reach out, and to hasten this process, it took a full month to hear back from a clinician (note: it is now only a week until I travel because of the awful response time from the NHS). In the call they noted the time-frame until I travel (not my fault, I have been waiting for a month) and says that my local Chemist might be able to help. it seems they only want to check my name off their list, and presumably has done now that they have passed me off onto my chemist (which could've been done ages ago) despite wasting over a month on this whole process (which I noted at the beginning was time-critical).

Numerous times I reached back out via Email to the Tayside Vac Centre noting how little time I had, and they noted that they are processing February travel soon (my date with them was the 1st, so who they prioritized over me I do not know).

So in summary I was offered no meaningful help for a month and a half, simply told to try a chemist. I have less than a week before I travel because the Clinicians have sat on my file for over a month, despite my travel date. I sincerely doubt the chemist's will be able to offer me the needed jabs on that time-frame (again the NHS have given them 4 working days to do this). I have also reached out to a private clinic in Dundee, but even they have said they cannot help given the short time-frame until I travel.

In my experience, the NHS has completely failed in its duty of care to provide myself, despite plenty of time and myself reaching out numerous times, with potentially life-saving vaccinations before I travel. I am angry and disappointed, but none of this will change the reality.

Good morning

Thank you for providing this valuable feedback for the service. I am very sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience whilst trying to receive your vaccinations. As a service we will ensure to take all of your comments and feedback on board. This assists us to continually work to improve our systems and processes.

I have asked a member of the travel team to look into your case to see if they can assist, as a matter of priority.

Kind regards

Katy (Senior Charge Nurse)
