"They helped me cope and be strong for my son"

About: Paediatrics / Acorn Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

My baby son was an inpatient, in January 2024, staying on the Paediatric Unit, Acorn Ward, Musgrove Park Hospital. During this time, we were looked after by the team of ward nurses, including Staff Nurse Beth and the medical team including Dr Whiting.

We had arrived at MPH, following a stay at Bristol Royal Children's Hospital, where my son received great care and made a full recovery. It was however, an extremely distressing time for our family and we were relieved to arrive back in Taunton as this was slightly nearer to home and our other children etc.

Beth made sure that myself and my son were looked after during her shift. While all the nurses were very attentive and ensured they treated us with respect and dignity, I felt that Beth was particularly sensitive to how I was feeling and made me feel calm and reassured during a very upsetting time.

Being treated kindly and with respect, taking into account my feelings and wishes and those of my husband made all the difference. The simple task of  making sure I was fed, had a drink and someone who was there made the whole situation a bit easier to cope with.

I would also like to thank Meghan, who I believe was an HCA on duty, as she was very kind and helped me to bath my baby when I wasn't feeling confident to do so.

During the admission process, which took place late at night, we were seen by one of the consultants on duty (present at night, as there were strikes). I can't remember her name, but she was so kind and patient, going through quite a lot of paperwork and helping me to cope with the situation so I could then be strong for my son. I don't think people realise the difference it makes to be welcomed on to a unit in such a sensitive manner.

Dr Whiting was also pivotal in supporting myself and my husband. She made the effort to clearly and regularly communicate with us in a informative, calm and respectful manner. Recognising how stressful it was and also making sure that our son continued to recover and do well. She listened to my concerns, without dismissing them and I would like my thanks and acknowledgement passed on.

Dear Cricketcj84

Thank you so much for the time you have taken to share your positive experiences when staying on PAU and Acorn ward.

I am thrilled you were given the upmost and whole-hearted kindness, support and consideration from everyone who looked after you during your stay with us. I am so pleased to hear your son made a full recovery from his illness.

We very much appreciate when care is approached with kindness and thoughtfulness and encompasses all needs in an individualised manner, it greatly eases the distressing times when your little ones are admitted to hospital and the additional stresses it can bring. It is lovely to hear you were given such care and specifically Dr Whiting, the night shift Consultant, Nurse Beth and HCA Meghan addressed all your needs so comprehensively and with such kindness. We are extremely fortunate to have them as part of our team – they are hugely valued by everyone in the Children’s unit too!

I have already directly shared your feedback and your kind thanks with Dr Whiting, Nurse Beth, HCA Meghan and we are actively looking to identify the Consultant who kindly supported you during the night shift. I have also shared your feedback with the whole of the Children’s Unit so your feedback will certainly reach everyone you kindly mentioned. I am in no doubt everyone will be delighted and greatly appreciative of your kind words and thanks.

I do hope you, your son and family are all doing well following your discharge home.

Thank you again for your very kind thanks and acknowledgements of our care.

Kindest regards

Dr Holly
