"Waiting Times"

About: Children's Specialist Health Services / Children's Speech & Language Therapy University Hospital Wishaw / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was referred to Speech and Language Services in June 2022 due to delayed speech. He has not yet received any input from Speech and Language Services, the last update I received approximately two weeks ago when I called was that referrals from March 2022 were being dealt with and no timescale could be offered for him being assessed despite me offering to travel to any clinic with him.

He also has issues with his hearing (he is currently attending audiology) and was referred to ENT in April 2023 via his GP and then by audiology due to issues with his ears and throat. I was advised in July 2023 that there was a 36 week waiting list for an initial ENT consultation, He has now waited over 36 weeks and there has been no contact from ENT.

I delayed my sons school start last year in the hope he would have been assessed and treated by both ENT and Speech and Language services. I appreciate that services are struggling and are very stretched however I am very disappointed at the time he has waited and without very little update from either department.

Dear AshS

Thank you for taking the time to message regarding your child's wait for speech and language therapy. I am very sorry that you and your son are having to wait for the length of time you describe. As a department we are working to get through our waiting lists but I recognize this is still taking a great deal of time.

I would like to ask if you can contact me personally on 01698 753744 so that I can discuss your son's case and look at what support we can offer you at this time.

Again I apologize for the length of time you have been waiting and I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Christine

Dear AshS

I am sorry to hear about your son's issues with his hearing and the long wait to be seen by ENT Paediatrics - we are still dealing with the backlog on the waiting list which built up during the Covid Pandemic and waiting times are much longer than we would wish. We are actively working on this and have some extra clinics taking place over the coming months.

If you can get in touch with Audrey Wilson, Directorate Support Manager, with your son's details she will see what can be done to try and expedite the appointment. Audrey's email address is: audrey.wilson2@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Kind Regards

Lynn McTavish
